Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Clacks

What's the difference between POP3 and IMAP?
POP3 downloads messages and typically removes them from the server, best for simple one-way forwarding. IMAP syncs messages while keeping them on the server, allowing you to select specific folders and mark messages as read after import.
Are my email credentials secure?
Yes! All credentials are encrypted using XChaCha20-Poly1305, a modern authenticated encryption algorithm. Your passwords are never stored in plain text and the encryption keys are securely managed.
How often are emails checked?
By default, email accounts are polled every 5 minutes. You can configure per-route polling intervals, and higher-tier plans offer faster polling. You can also manually trigger a sync at any time from the dashboard.
Can I route emails to an IMAP account instead of Gmail?
Yes! When creating a route, you can choose either Gmail or an IMAP account as the destination. For IMAP destinations, you can specify the target folder where messages are delivered.
Can I use Gmail labels with imported emails?
Absolutely! When routing to Gmail, you can specify labels to apply automatically, choose whether emails appear in the inbox or are archived, and mark them as read or unread.
Do you offer Send Mail As (SMTP alias) support?
Yes! You can set up Send Mail As aliases so you can reply to forwarded emails from your original email address directly in Gmail. This also helps prevent imported emails from being flagged as spam.
My imported emails are going to spam. How do I fix this?
If messages are landing in spam, adding your custom email address as a Send Mail As alias in Gmail usually resolves this. When your custom address is actively associated with your Gmail account, Google trusts incoming messages to that address more and routes them to your inbox instead of spam.
What happens if my email server is temporarily unreachable?
Clacks will automatically retry failed connections and queue pending operations. Once your server is back online, synchronization resumes normally. You can monitor sync history and errors from your dashboard.
Can I connect multiple destination accounts?
Yes! You can connect multiple Gmail accounts and IMAP accounts. Each route defines its own source and destination, giving you complete flexibility to route emails between any combination of providers.
Is there a limit on how many emails can be imported?
There's no hard limit on the number of emails. For Gmail destinations, Clacks respects Gmail's daily quotas and automatically paces imports. For IMAP destinations, delivery is limited only by your mail server's capacity.
